Four destinies collide in a unique fantasy world of war and wonders, where empire is won with enchanted steel and magical animal companions fight. Review: Steel Crow Saga by Paul Krueger. Steel Crow Saga is one of those books where at first I wasn't sure, but then by the end I was hooked. There are so many moving parts and relationships that it needs a steady foundation. But once you push past that point, you can fall in love. On social media, Paul Krueger (Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge) has described his new novel Steel Crow Saga as a book he wrote for himself—not to capitalize on a trend or play to the marketplace, but to reveal himself fully on the page. Would that every author trusted their instincts so well.
Krueger’s writing soars when it comes to the worldbuilding, especially regarding the perfect balance he managed to strike between magic and technology. The four nations/empires Steel Crow Saga centers around are heavily influenced by four real world Asian countries, their histories and their cultures. We come across the lore, the myths and the history of this world as the story progresses, and that gives it an ancient and real feel. Steel Crow Saga alternates among four POVs. One a Sambuna soldier, one the crown prince of Tomoda, one a Shang (China) princess and detective, and another a Jeongson (China-dominated Korea) criminal turned the detective’s partner. A soldier with a curse Tala lost her family to the empress's army and has spent her life avenging them in battle. But the empress's crimes don't haunt her half as much as the crimes Tala has committed against the laws of magic and her own flesh and blood. A prince with a debt Jimuro has inherited the ashes of an empire. Now that the revolution has brought down his kingdom, he must depend.
